38 Now while they were on their way, Jesus entered a village [called Bethany], and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. 39 She had a sister named Mary, who seated herself at the Lord’s feet and was continually listening to His teaching.
Luke 10:38 – 39
Many of us know the event of Martha and her sister Mary, and are able to identify with either of the two when it comes to spending time with the Lord.
Mary saw an incredible opportunity to spend intimate time with the Lord and did so by sitting at His feet, fully engaged and listening to the teachings of Jesus and what He and His disciples were busy discussing. To her, this was a rare opportunity into the very mind and heart of the Lord Jesus and she wasn’t going to let anything distract her from missing out on such an opportunity.
Think about it in this way: if you were given the opportunity to spend some time to just be in the presence of someone you really admire, would you allow anything to distract you or would you put all hinderances aside (ignoring everything) and simply sit in on the conversation they would have with those around them?
It’s a silly question as every one of us would make sure we get every moment’s worth of time with them – getting to know how they view situations and how they would go about doing life. In the same way, we get to have these moments when we set time aside, spending time in devotion with the Lord.
Here is where we get to know the mind and heart of Christ Jesus and how He would want us to react and respond to life around us. Sadly, we don’t view these opportunities as rare insights, as we know we can have them at any time. But need I remind you that this is not just another mere person, but the Lord Jesus (God) Himself? We don’t treat these moments nearly as important or rare as they deserve to be treated and then wonder why we fail to understand the heart of God, or think the way Christ would want us to think.
We need to get back to the same heart Mary carried and see that the time we get to spend with our Lord and Saviour are rare moments of insight we get to experience. This is the only way we will get to know the Lord on a more intimate level on our journey.
My friend, while there are so many people we wish we are able to get to know, they are just mere men and women. But to know the heart of God, the very One who created those we come to admire and all the beauty we see around us, that is someone worth getting to know more intimately!
Today, view your time alone with the Lord in the same way you would the person you most admire here on earth and give Him your undivided attention.
He is so much more worth it!
Heavenly Father. I thank you that I get to spend time alone with You, getting to know the very One who created all we see around us. May the time I spend with You be full of insight, helping me to become more like the One we call Lord and Saviour. I pray this in Jesus name. Amen.
